Description

I took this black and white photograph in 1974. I was attracted to the caryatids supporting the cast iron balcony. The location is Whitburn Hall, South Shields on Tyneside. The Hall dated, in part, to the 16th century.

The building was under threat of demolition and redevelopment. A few weeks after I took the photograph, it burnt down. Demolition eventually came in 1978. It was left open and exposed to the weather and vandals, so that probably isn’t surprising,

Print size is about A4 (11.5″ by 8.5″) matted in white acid-free board to 40 cm by 30 cm (approx 15.75″ by 12″).

I will personally sign and date both the picture and the mount

The second picture is not included, but shows the whole south front of the building. The caryatids are at about the centre of the building front.
