Carnival by the Sea
Carnival by the Sea was probably completed around the same time as Forbert (see here). It shares the same sweeping serpentine shape, combined with more characteristic mark‑making such as the barred blocks of colour. These prints are not made in a single session: layers are added over time in an intuitive process that responds to the outcomes of previous additions. Knowing when to stop is sometimes harder than knowing how to start, and it may take a couple of weeks after the final layer before I know the work is finished.
The turquoise blue at the top suggested a coastline, while the exuberant red and yellow brought to mind brightly coloured circus or carnival tents. Beyond that, the title has no fixed significance — it simply reflects the mood and associations that emerged during the making.
